picspam: I'm So Excited! I'm So Scared!

This is the greatest Saved By The Bell scene in the greatest Saved By The Bell episode ever. It's better than Zack taking down corporate America on behalf of Becky the duck. Better than Mrs. B giving birth in an elevator. Better than Kelly faking rage blackouts or all of Bayside wanting Zack to be their Valentine only to have Slater save the day because Zack is his one and only. It's better than Jessie's stepbrother inappropriately hitting on her or Zack getting into Yale only to go to a fake college for SBTB: The College Years. Better than the gang in togas and Kelly getting dumped by Jeff at The Attic because he was a sleeze (but she deserved it for dumping Zack Morris for ugly old Jeff who would go on to rape Jane Mancini on Melrose Place!). Better than Zack Attack and Snow White and the Seven Dorks. Better than Zack and Lisa insisting that their romantic relationship was going to be different only to have it never come up again. Better than Slater dancing around the Max in a tutu or the boys dancing around to the Beach Boys. Better than Zack and Kelly (OTP OTP OTP!) getting back together at Jessie's father's wedding even though Zack had a really unfortunate case of peroxide blonde going on at the time. It's even better than them getting married!

"Jessie's Song" is better than a number of other episodes that I can think of off the top of my head. It's, dare I say, SO EPIC THAT I STILL HAVE IT ON VHS. The shenanigans in this episode pretty much define epic. You've got Screech dressed up like Mrs. Doubtfire and pretending to be Sinead O'Connor's aunt so he can tape the girls singing with the mic outfitted inside his mop handle, Slater being good at something other than gay porn, Zack refusing to believe that Jessie could have a problem because she's [his] friend, okay?, and most epic of all, Jessie taking over the counter caffeine pills and the show treating it like it's a crack addiction! I cannot believe that Jessica Myrtle Spano would have to resort to heroin caffeine pills for a geometry test! I figured the only time she would ever need some sort of supplement was when she was thisclose to figuring out the key to life and even then, it would only be because she wanted to double-check the equation. But GEOMETRY? Really, Jessie? I guess being part of the world Max-wide sensation that was The Hot Sundaes is enough to stress anyone out.

Nevertheless, "Jessie's Song" is a pop culture gem for the ages. I reference it at least once a week, no lie.

JESSIE: Zack? What time is it? I have to take my geometry test.
ZACK: You already took the test.
JESSIE: Oh right.
ZACK: Yeah. It's 6:30. Come on, we gotta go.
JESSIE: Where are we going?
ZACK: Where are we going? You're singing tonight!
I love how Zack is talking to her like she's a cute puppy that he's training. DARK TIMES ARE LOOMING, MORRIS! SUIT UP! (Also, take note of his rolled up blazer sleeves.) Cue up the dramatic music because Jessie Spano has a serious problem! She's losing time! She's groggy after a nap! Crack is wack! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, SOMEBODY CALL D.A.R.E.!


JESSIE: Singing?
ZACK: Yeah.
JESSIE: Tonight?
ZACK: Come on!
JESSIE: Wait, what am I gonna wear?
ZACK: Jessie, remember? Lisa's bringing your costume?
JESSIE: Right! I gotta wash my hair!
ZACK: No, there's no time!
JESSIE: No time! There's never any time! I don't have time to study! I'll never get into Stanford! I'll let everyone down! I'm so confused!
ZACK: Jessie, hey! Hey, just calm down! It's okay!
Poor Zack. He's probably so afraid that crazy!drug-addicted!Requiem For A Dream!Jessie is going to stab him! I feared for Preppy's life, I did. Also, Jessie's "no time" freak out? ACES!


JESSIE: You're right. Everything will be okay. I just need one of these.
ZACK: Pills? You mean you really are taking drugs?
JESSIE: I need them.
ZACK: Jessie, give me those.
JESSIE: I need them, Zack! I have to sing!
ZACK: Jes-sie! You can't sing tonight!
JESSIE: Yes, I can! I'm so excited! I'm so excited! I'm so...scared!
BEST. MOMENT. EVER. ♥♥♥


ZACK: Jessie, Jessie. Come on. Jessie. Hey, don't be scared! Listen, we'll get through this. Hey, come on. Remember that time when we snuck out to see E.T.? We were riding home on our bikes and it was so dark and we were scared. Come on.
BWAH! Seriously, Zack? That's what you tell a dope fiend? A completely unrelated, totally irrelevant story about E.T.? DUDE. THAT IS NOT WHAT NITRO WOULD DO!

Oh sweet crack, I miss you so much! I worry about the kids of today because they don't have SBTB or Jim and Cindy Walsh to teach them important life lessons. How can you function without TNBC or TGIF? Feel safe in a world where you aren't taught that all of your problems can be solved within the span of thirty minutes by having a talk with Danny Tanner or know that you can barge into your neighbor's house all the time, break fifteen different things, and never have to pay for a single one like Urkel? It is possible that there are kids out there who don't know The Beets and the joys of getting dangerous because it's morphin' time! GOOD TIMES. I mean, what the hell do kids even watch these days?

I loved this show sfm. I cannot believe they ruined it with the college crap, blah.

But I agree. This was one of the best scenes in the series. I have that scene favored on youtube :P Great job, as always!

I'll still occassionally watch the college stuff, but it was so bad and non-SBTBish that I like to think of it as being apart from the REAL SBTB. But The New Class didn't even have Zack Morris going for it! That was all fail!

This was the best episode of ANYTHING, EVER.

God, you just don't get shows this cracktastic anymore, do you? Or, if you do, they're cracktastic in the bad way, rather than in the good way. And you sure don't get this.

I seriously can't say the phrase "so excited" (or even "excited" at times) without breaking into that scene. Thankfully I work with people who understand, we've seriously done that whole scene just because :) I too feel very sorry for the youth of this generation ... how can you not grow up on Saved by the Bell or Boy Meets World?

Hahahaha, oh my god, this is so amazing. It's one of those episodes that has like, defined a generation. Because really, who can sing "I'm So Excited" without breaking into "I'm so... SCARED!" No one. No one can.

Haha! I love it! And I loved the intro you wrote! But don't forget that strange season with Tori where Kelly and Jessie didn't even exist! And they graduated high school TWICE!

Ah yes, the season where they filmed the real graduation with Kelly and Jessie early because the actresses were leaving the show and then had all those random filler episodes with Tori in which she had to strongarm Zack into liking her. Good times!

Oh my goodness, this is by far one of the most awesome things I've seen today. This is a classic from our generation, no doubt.

I wonder how kids function nowadays without TNBC, too. I want more California Dreams and Hang Time please!

And speaking of SBTB on VHS, I have both "SBTB: The Movie" AND the "Wedding in Las Vegas" taped from their original airings. Oh, how I love commercials from the early 90s.

I watched an old episode of Hang Time online recently (but not old old since it was the one where Hammer and Mary-Beth go out on a date and like each other but try to keep it from Kristy because she likes Hammer) and I almost died with all of the studio audience "oooooo"s. WE NEED MORE WHOLESOME SATURDAY TV WHERE HOLDING HANDS IS SCANDALOUS!

And speaking of SBTB on VHS, I have both "SBTB: The Movie" AND the "Wedding in Las Vegas" taped from their original airings.
WIN! I watch both every time they come on. It's ridiculous! I especially love EB trying to steal the show at the end of the wedding one when Jessie runs into the wedding, shoe in hand, and starts crying about how she could never miss something like this and she'll just go to summer school. Those were probably tears of "I can't believe I screwed up my career with Striptease."

Ahahaha, no lie, I just had to give a presentation on the teen genre of television last week, and the VERY FIRST CLIP we showed was "I'm so excited! I'm so...SCARED!" and pretty much everyone sang along because it IS TRULY THAT EPIC. Even all the boys, I'm pretty sure.

This is my new favorite picspam of all time? Plus your introduction basically makes me want to rewatch every single episode of SBTB ever, when is that gloriousness on TV anyway? (haha, Zack was such a manwhore, dating Lisa AND Kelly (for serious, OTP OF ALL OTPS) AND Jessie)

I own every single episode of SBTB on DVD (not the New Class, because that's lame, but all the real series.) and this? This is why. Saved by the Bell was EPIC. Seriously.
